Find Articles

There are generally two main types of articles that can be found through the library databases, Popular Articles and Scholarly Articles. Popular Articles are mostly non-scholarly and are written for the general public. These types of articles are mostly found in newspapers and magazines. Scholarly Articles are peer-reviewed by professionals within that field of study and authored by experts and researchers that are doing original research, theories, and analyses. The purpose of these articles are to advance knowledge within that specific academic discipline. The structure will contain a combination of the following aspects: abstract, introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and conclusion. Scholarly article should always include citations in the form of a works cited, references, footnotes, or bibliography page. These types of articles are also commonly referred to as academic journals or peer-reviewed articles.

To find scholarly articles, you can either do a search using the Onesearch box or if there is a particular database you wish to use, you can go to the A-Z Databases page. The steps to finding articles is similar in both methods, the key difference is that Onesearch searches through all the databases that the library has to offer, whereas searching on a single database will only show articles offered within that specific database.

To search:

  • Type in your keywords, title of the article, author, or publisher and click search/enter.
  • Next filter for "Scholarly/peer-reviewed". There are also a variety of other filters that you can use to narrow down your search.
  • Once you find an article that useful to your research click on the title.
  • If using Onesearch, look for "View Online" and click on the link to view the article in the database page.
    • If accessing off-campus make sure to type in your student email address and password on the SDCCD single sign-on page.
  • Once you are in the database you have the option to either download a PDF or view online.

Find Books & eBooks

How to Find Physical Books

  1. Go to OneSearch.
  2. Enter in some keywords, a book title, or an author's name into the search box.
  3. On the left side of the results page, apply these filters:
  • Resource Type: Books & eBooks
  • Availability: Available on-site
  • Library: San Diego Miramar College
  1. Click on the title of the book you want and write down the call number (for example: Circulating Collection – PL856.U673 N6713 2000).
  2. Use the call number to find the book on the shelf.

How to Find eBooks Online

  1. Go to OneSearch.
  2. Enter in some keywords, a book title, or an author's name into the search box.
  3. On the left side of the results page, apply these filters:
  • Resource Type: Books & eBooks
  • Availability: Available online
  1. Click on the title of the book you want and select View Online.

If you're accessing the eBook from off campus, you'll be asked to sign in through the SDCCD Single Sign-On page using your student email address and password.

Once you're signed in, you can read the eBook online and, in many cases, download chapters.
