Military Outreach Programs and Services for Active Duty Military and Family Members

San Diego Miramar College offers a variety of general education courses aboard Marine Corps Air Station Miramar (MCAS). These courses are open to military personnel, their families, and all Miramar College students (For more information about civilian access please read "Getting on Base (Civilian)".

Benefits of Taking On-Base Courses:

  • Courses are offered in 8-week sessions five times a year

  • Courses fulfill general education requirements
  • All classes are transferable to 4-year colleges and universities
  • ACE recommended credit from your military service schools may be applied towards the 60 units required for an Associate Degree.
  • Assists in preparing for a career change

  • Your best value at $46.00 a unit

Tuition Assistance

  • All four service branches and the U.S. Coast Guard offer financial assistance for voluntary, off-duty education programs in support of service members’ personal and professional goals. The program is open to officers, warrant officers and enlisted active-duty service personnel. In addition, members of the National Guard and Reserve Components may be eligible for TA based on their service eligibility. To be eligible for TA, an enlisted service member must have enough time remaining in service to complete the course for which he or she has applied. After the completion of a course, an officer using TA must fulfill a service obligation that runs parallel with – not in addition to – any existing service obligation. Please connect with your respective Education Service Officer (ESO) regarding your eligibility prior to enrolling. 

TA Application Process

Each military branch has its own TA application form and procedures. To find out how to get started, visit your local installation education center, go online to a virtual education center or click on the following links for each service branch:

Prior to your course enrollment, you may be required to develop an education plan or complete TA orientation. Be sure to keep the following important information in mind when you apply:

  • Military tuition assistance may only be used to pursue degree programs at colleges and universities in the United States that are regionally or nationally accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S Department of Education. A quick way to check the accreditation of a school is by visiting the Department of Education.
  • Your service’s education center must approve your military tuition assistance before you enroll in a course.

Admissions 

All new students must file an application for admission. Students who have previously attended, but have not been in continuous attendance for a year must file a new application for admission.

Military Academic Skills Program (MASP): MASP is designed to help Military personnel and their family members enhance their English & Math skills. This FREE, two-week program helps students build a solid academic foundation, prepare for exams, improve English and Math knowledge and more! MASP is held in The Hub, building 5305. FAFSA Workshops: The on-base Education Center offers a FAFSA workshop every other Tuesday from 1130-1300. This workshop is available to Military Personnel and their families in The Hub (building 5305). No registration required.

1.COMPLETE THE FAFSA APPLICATION
Students should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.govFederal school code – 014172.
2021-2022 FAFSA:  Fall 2021, Spring 2022, Summer 2022
2022-2023 FAFSA: Fall 2022, Spring 2023, Summer 2023

2.AWAIT CONFIRMATION
The FAFSA system will notify you that your application has been processed within 48 hours, but you’ll need to wait until the Financial Aid Office sends an email confirmation in approximately 5-7 days.  You can also check to see if your application has been received on the school online portal – MySDCCD.

 3.SUBMIT DOCUMENTATION
In most cases, you’ll need to submit various documents and complete forms during the verification process.  Forms must be submitted as soon as possible or by the deadline listed on each form.  Applicants will be notified by email and through MySDCCD.

4.THE PROCESSING PERIOD
Once you’ve submitted all documents required for verification, you’ll need to wait for the Financial Aid Office to package your awards.  This packaging process requires your application to be reviewed for accuracy based on any required documentation submitted.  Review of your application may take an average of 3-4 weeks for processing.

5.THE AWARD LETTER
When the Financial Aid Office has finished reviewing your application, you’ll be notified of your financial aid eligibility through an e-mailed Award Letter, and can be viewed online at MySDCCD.  The Award Letter will contain the specific names of the programs and the amounts for which you have qualified for based on your enrollment level. 

6.FINANCIAL AID DISBURSEMENT
Disbursement dates are posted online at the Financial Aid Office website.  You may also pick up a disbursement schedule at the Financial Aid Office.  Mailed disbursements will be sent to the address as listed on your account on the school portal – MySDCCD.  Direct Deposit is available through the portal as well.

Be sure to stop by Admissions on Campus or the MCAS Miramar College Office to verify your military service for priority registration purposes. You may show your Active Duty Military ID card in person, or you may also email a copy of both your most recent LES statement and basic orders to MiramarVeterans@sdccd.edu. Please include your 10-digit student ID number in all email correspondences. For Veteran Students, you may submit a copy of your DD-214 (member 4 page) to verify your military service. Feel free to reference the Priority Enrollment System below which will show you what priority group you will be placed into:

 
 
 

Classes are available on-station for the upcoming Spring 2022 semester!

 

Students on active duty or reserve duty may petition for a "military" withdrawal. This withdrawal is not calculated in the determination of academic progress and is noted on the student's academic record.

Tutoring Services are made available through the campus Academic Success Center (ASC). Please visit the ASC site for more information. 


Getting on Base (Civilian):
