Biotechnology Outreach

SCBC/Miramar Biotechnology Outreach equips secondary school educators with training, support, and research-grade equipment to bring real-world biotechnology into the classroom. Our programs include hands-on labs such as PCR, ELISA, DNA extraction, and gel electrophoresis—giving students authentic scientific experiences that inspire learning.

Kit and Reagent Reservations

Trained teachers will have 3 opportunities to request kits/consumables for the 2026-2027 school year.

  • July 27-August 21 (for pick-up August-May)

  • November 16-20 (for pick-up January-May)

  • January 25-29 (for pick-up March-May)

To help you plan, please use the following resources.

  • Review kit contents to determine which kits you might need.
  • Use the 2026-2027 Pick-up/Drop-off Calendar to identify when kits/consumables will be available.
  • Use the 2026-2027 Reservations Calendar to see which kits have already been reserved before requesting materials.
  • New Requirement: Teachers who receive kits/consumables during the 2026-2027 school year must complete an implementation survey at the end of the school year. This is needed for grant funding.

Teaching and Learning Materials

Below are the resources that trained teachers will need to implement the labs in the classroom.

Please see the Additional Resources folder for information about lab math and flowgramming.  Further resources for ABE-specific labs can be found at the international ABE website.

Teacher Training and Workshops

Teacher training is typically offered once per year in June/July (as long as there is funding). If you are interesting in attending an upcoming teacher training please send an email to [email protected] to be added to the interest list.

Community of Practice

Our Biotechnology Community of Practice (CoP) is an initiative from the Miramar College Biotechnology Outreach team and Mira Mesa High School created specifically for high school educators. Whether you're looking to integrate foundational biotech lessons for the first time or seeking to expand your existing instruction this group is for you! The CoP is designed to be a collaborative space for all teachers interested in biotech, providing valuable resources, specialized knowledge, and a strong professional network.

Our next workshop will be on September 15, 2026. More details to come. Please reach out to [email protected] if you have questions.
