Chemical Safety

Chemical Safety

At San Diego Miramar College there are several programs that work with variety of hazardous chemicals. The Hazardous Material Business Plan (HMBP) is to provide employee at Miramar College the necessary information in storing hazardous materials on campus. It goals is to prevent or minimize damage to public health, safety, and the environment from the release or exposure of hazardous materials. The HMBP provides emergency response personnel the information to help them prepare and respond to chemical-related incidents at our campus.

In addition to HMBP, Miramar College also has Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP). The CHP is much more specific information about safety procedure in handling chemicals, proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment (PPE), and hazardous waste disposal in laboratory setting than HMBP. Hazard material business plan covers all employees exposed to chemicals at Miramar College, while a chemical hygiene plan is primarily for laboratory personnel. The HMBP and CHP help reduce injuries and illness resulting from exposure to hazardous chemicals. All area that works with hazardous chemical should have a copy of both of communication plans.

Miramar College has several industrial programs, automotive technology, diesel technology and aviation, along with facility operation that use oil product as part of their daily operation.  All areas that works with petroleum and oil must follow the Spill Plan Control and Countermeasure. The goal of this plan is to protect the health and safety of college personnel, general public, minimize damage to equipment and building, and minimize contaminate in the environment due to oil spill. The program has been developed accordance with California State regulation (Aboveground Petroleum Storage Act), Federal Oil Pollution Prevention Regulation (40 CFR110-112), and standard industry regulations. The SPCC plan will be updated once every five years and will be amended whenever there is a change in campus design, construction, operation, or maintenance which materially affects the campus' potential for discharge of petroleum products (40CFR 112,1(b)).

Lastly, Miramar College has a Storm Water Pollution Prevent Plan (SWPPP) to prevent chemical contamination in storm water drains. Facility operation is trained on this plan annually and implementing the plan throughout campus.
