Financial Aid Awareness Month

February marks the start of Financial Aid Awareness Month, #FinAidFeb, which is an effort to disseminate financial aid information to students and families about access to federal, state, and institutional aid. SD Miramar College Financial Aid & Scholarships has created multiple workshops, tabling events, and will even share our efforts of spreading Financial Aid Awareness to *NASFAA! We have 3 upcoming virtual workshops (Feb 7 - Feb 9) attached in this email that will go over Scholarships, the FAFSA/CADAA, and how students may qualify for $2,500 (Gold State Education Training Grant Program).

*National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators (NASFAA) is the only national, nonprofit association with a primary focus on information dissemination, professional development, and legislative and regulatory analysis related to federal student aid programs.

As for this week, we would like to highlight this week on Scholarships- the deadline is coming up: Friday, February 10th! Read below for all important information regarding scholarships and how to apply now.

So, what exactly are scholarships? Are there different types?

There are 2 types of scholarships

  1. Internal scholarships: scholarships that are administered by colleges or universities directly.
    1. From San Diego Miramar College, here is a list of internal scholarships that you can apply for NOW
  2. External scholarships: scholarships that are awarded by an organization other than the government or your college.

What should I look out for when applying for scholarships?

Scholarship scams are more common than you think. Here are 3 points to look out for:

  1. Processing costs & redemption fees: There should NEVER be an application fee
  2. Too good to be true? It probably is: Receiving an unexpected check from a "scholarship" you never recalled applying for? It's probably a scam.
  3. Your sources: Make sure to use reputable sources on your search for scholarships, not phony websites!

Do I still have to turn in a hard copy scholarship application to Miramar?

NO, you do not! Applying for scholarships just got easier with our new system:

  • Everything is now digital and online
  • Students can apply online by answering a few questions, then are given a selection of scholarships they are eligible to apply for!
