California Senator Adam Schiff will speak at San Diego Miramar College’s May 15 Commencement Ceremony held on Compass Point. The commencement ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Check in for graduates begins at 8 am in K1-Student Services Building. Graduates will begin lining up at 9 a.m. with the procession starting at 9:45 a.m.
Senator Schiff is in his first term as United States Senator for California. He was elected in 2024 after two decades of service in the United States House of Representatives.
Senator Schiff was born in Framingham, Massachusetts, and moved to the Bay Area as a child. He graduated from Danville’s Monte Vista High School before attending Stanford University and Harvard Law School. After law school, Senator Schiff served as a federal prosecutor in Los Angeles where he successfully prosecuted a crooked FBI agent turned-Russian spy and started the first federal environmental crimes unit in Los Angeles, going after polluters and toxic waste dumpers. He was elected to the California State Senate in 1996, and taught political science at Glendale Community College prior to his election to Congress in the year 2000.
Throughout his time in office, Senator Schiff has focused on protecting our national security and democracy, fighting for our planet, and creating an economy that works for everyone.
In the Senate, he now serves on the Agriculture, Judiciary, Small Business and Environment and Public Works Committees, and is a member of the Senate National Security Working Group.
“Senator Schiff’s presence is a powerful reflection of just how significant this moment is, not just for our graduates, but for our entire community,” said Dr. Wes Lundburg, president of San Diego Miramar College. “This is a moment worthy of recognition at every level, and we want every graduate, family member, and guest to realize the impact of what has been accomplished at Miramar College.”
To ensure that this day is as smooth, celebratory and safe as it deserves to be, those attending the commencement ceremony may notice an increased security presence on campus during Commencement. Please plan to arrive early and please remember to follow the direction of staff who are here to help and ensure a wonderful event.
Miramar College will confer 1,677 associate degrees, of which, 730 will be Associates Degree for Transfer (ADT). Graduates have also earned 787 certificates. Eighty-nine degree seeking students will graduate with a perfect 4.0 grade point average.
As we prepare to celebrate, please note that both the Library (LLRC) and the K-1 Building will be closed to the public on the day of the ceremony. As in previous years, these areas will be used for staging activities for the Commencement Ceremony.
In addition, we ask that faculty and staff please park in either of the campus parking garages on Commencement Day. Leaving Lots 1 and 2 available will help ensure adequate parking for our graduates and their guests as they arrive to celebrate this important milestone.
