Miramar College will host its Second Annual Youth & Social Powwow, a community celebration honoring Native American culture, identity, and intergenerational connection. The event is presented in partnership with the San Diego Unified School District Title VI Indian Education Program, which provides cultural, academic, and community support services to American Indian and Alaska Native students throughout the district.
This year’s Powwow brings together students, families, educators, and tribal community members for a day of traditional dance, music, food, and cultural exchange. The gathering reflects a shared commitment to uplifting Native youth and strengthening pathways to higher education.
“On behalf of our students, staff, and faculty, it is my honor to welcome you to our campus for the Second Annual Youth & Social Powwow,” said Dr. Wes Lundburg, president of Miramar College. “We are grateful for those who will join us to celebrate culture, community, and the enduring strength of Native traditions.”
Miramar College is one of 21 California Community Colleges implementing the Native American Student Success and Support Program (NASSSP), a statewide initiative designed to expand educational opportunities for American Indian and Alaska Native students. Through NASSSP, Miramar has strengthened K–12 pathways, expanded culturally grounded support services, increased transfer opportunities to UC and CSU campuses, cultivated leadership development, and broadened mentorship networks.
Over the past year, NASSSP has supported the opening of Miramar’s Native Resource Center, welcomed new cohorts of Native scholars, hosted cultural celebrations and educational workshops, and deepened partnerships with tribal nations and Native‑serving organizations.
The Powwow also highlights the essential work of the SDUSD Title VI Indian Education Program, which provides academic tutoring, cultural enrichment, advocacy, and family engagement services for eligible Native students. Supported by federal Title VI and Johnson‑O’Malley funding, the program ensures that Native youth receive culturally responsive support throughout their K–12 education—support that continues through partnerships with institutions like Miramar College.
Event Highlights Include:
- Grand Entry and Intertribal Dancing
- Drum Groups and Traditional Singers
- Youth Activities and Cultural Demonstrations
- Native Arts, Crafts, and Food Vendors
- Community Resource Booths
The event is free and open to the public.
