San Diego Miramar College will expand its intercollegiate sports programs by adding three new sports for the upcoming academic year. The athletic department will add men’s soccer, men’s swimming and women’s swimming bringing its total intercollegiate offerings to ten sports. Men’s soccer will begin competition in the fall of 2025, while the men’s and women’s swimming programs will begin competition in the spring of 2025. The San Diego Community College District Board of Trustees unanimously approved the development and implementation of these three new sports programs at its April 25, 2024 board meeting.
The three new programs will compete in the Pacific Coast Athletic Conference (PCAC).
“This action will contribute to the development of Miramar College and the School of Mathematics, Biological, Exercise & Physical Sciences and intercollegiate athletic department as a comprehensive educational institution, contribute toward meeting Title IX requirements , and enhance the community awareness and support of the college,” said Wes Lundburg, president of San Diego Miramar College.
“Given the large base of participation and popularity in the surrounding high schools, these teams will be a tremendous addition to the college,” said Nick Gehler, athletic director of San Diego Miramar College. “The California Interscholastic Federation’s (CIF) San Diego section (high school) has 116 varsity teams competing in boy’s soccer and 109 varsity teams in swim, so this is an easy match.”
There are currently seven local community college teams (Cuyamaca, MiraCosta, San Diego Mesa, San Diego City, Palomar, Southwestern, and Imperial Valley) in the PCAC for men’s soccer, and five (San Diego Mesa, Grossmont, Palomar, Southwestern, and Crafton Hills) for swim. Miramar College currently has a soccer field and state-of-the-art facilities to support the men’s and women’s swim teams.
The athletic department has also gained approval to add an Administrative Technician position to facilitate the demanding record keeping and budget monitoring of the athletics program. The School of Math, Biological, Exercise, and Physical Sciences (MBEPS) oversees the Athletics program.
