As the fall semester kicks into high gear, we wanted to take a moment to recognize that October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This month serves as a time to not only raise awareness of the detrimental impacts of domestic violence, but to also recognize survivors of domestic violence.
On average, an estimated 20 people per minute are physically abused by an intimate partner. Yearly, this equates to over 10 million people. Domestic violence is defined as an abusive behavior pattern used by a person on their partner to force power and control; this can affect anyone, even children. Abuse can be physical, emotional/ verbal, financial, digital abuse, and stalking.
In an effort to empower our Miramar community, we wanted to highlight some of the events and resources that Mental Health Services has organized in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
This month's Wellness Wednesday Workshops will have skills to support those who have experienced intimate partner abuse or unhealthy dating.
