The Miramar College Civil Rights Film Festival will be held Saturday, April 13 from 8:30am to 5:30pm in the H Building. Twelve different films will be shown and a live discussion will be held following each film. The event is free!
The following films will be shown at the following times.
8:30am to 10:00pm: Roadtrip Nation: Beyond the Dream
9:00am to 11:30am: TransMilitary; Get Out, A Night at the Garden, White Savior
11:45am-2:15pm: BlackkKlansman, The Soloist, Dolores
3:00pm-5:30pm: Awake, A Dream from Standing Rock, The Two Killings of Sam Cooke, Colette
The Miramar College Civil Rights Film Festival made its debut in 2010 as a tribute to students in the United States History Part II (Hist.110). The purpose of the program was to bring to light the biracial (black and white) struggle that culminated in the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's and 1970's and ensuing social activism that insisted on extending the promise of social justice and the so-called "American Dream" to additional groups long held in the peripheries of American Society. From its inception, the program was energized by Miramar College students’ active interest and involvement. In 2011, the program was expanded to include the plight of Mexican Americans and the United Farm Workers (UFW) in California. This year, supported by the Miramar College Diversity and International Education Committee (DIEC), the 2019 Civil Rights Film Festival continues to address a wider range of civil rights topics including, gender inequalities, LGBTQ inequalities, discrimination, and ethnic and cultural stereotypes and prejudices.
