Why did you choose Miramar?

I chose Miramar because of their unwavering and strong presence and commitment in the lives of students seeking to earn degrees, obtaining certifications, and successfully transferring to 4-year institutions

How has Miramar helped you on your educational journey?

The programs and classes at Miramar are exceptional and well-prepare students for their various goals, whether they are wanting to earn a degree, certifications, or transfer to a four-year university. However, I believe the most significant factor in my success has been the people at Miramar. As a low income, first-generation student, I was initially intimidated and overwhelmed by how complex it was to plan out my educational path towards transferring. Now, almost two years later, I can see how much I've learned through connecting with people across different offices and services. Programs like EOPS and Promise have been particularly impactful, providing me financial assistance with tuition and books as well as academic counseling that set me up for academic succcess.  The faculty, staff, and advisors have been greatly supportive, offering personalized guidance and encouragement.

What is your favorite memory from your time at Miramar?

My favorite time at Miramar would be working at the Scholarship Award Ceremony. I was involved in every aspect of the event from decorating the venue to cleaning it up afterward. I was able to meet so many new people, witness happy moments for students and their families, as well as bond with coworkers. It felt incredibly rewarding to witness and contribute to a meaningful event from start to finish.

Would you have any advice for new students?

Before starting college, I was often advised to listen to my counselors. While counselors are knowledgeable about the transfer process, it's essential for us to take proactive steps as well. My advice is not just to listen to your counselors, but to work with them. Take the initiative to plan and research on your own. It's our responsibility to assist those who are trying to help us. Provide them with as much information as possible, do your research on the programs or schools you're interested in, and choose classes that align with your program agreement or general education requirements. Not only that but also really connecting with your counselor both professionally and as a friend. I think what helped me get through college and the transfer process was knowing I had a counselor I was comfortable with and someone I could freely talk and ask questions to.
