Miramar College Diesel Students Take Gold and Silver at State Championships

Miramar College Diesel Technology students, Andres Geurts-Barreto (below-left) and Travis Digenan (below-right), earned the Gold and Silver medals respectively at the 2023 Region 6 SkillsUSA California Diesel Technology Championship.

"Andres and Travis have put in an immense amount of hard work and dedication to their studies and preparation for the competition," said Gene Choe, Diesel Professor at San Diego Miramar College. "Their success is a testament to their exceptional skills, passion, and commitment to the diesel technology field. As the chair of the Diesel Technology Program, I am thrilled to see our students excel in such a prestigious competition. It's a testament to the dedication and hard work of our faculty and staff to provide our students with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the industry."

Andres Geurts- Barreto won the Gold medal and Travis Digenan won Silver. The duo competed at the Ontario Convention Center in April 2023. Both started at Miramar College in spring of 2022. They will graduate soon and afterwards both have accepted a position as technician apprentices at Hawthorne machinery in Rancho Bernardo. 

Andres Geurts-Barreto will next head to Atlanta, Georgia to compete in the national diesel competition at Skills USA in June. The competition will be a 1 week event where 1 high school and 1 college competitor from each state will compete against each other over 14 different stations related to the diesel equipment and trucking industry.
