Bookstore Overcomes Covid-19 Obstacles to Remain Available to Students

On March 20, the Miramar College campus closed abruptly due to the COVID-19 pandemic. But while thousands of students and hundreds of employees scurried off campus to begin remote operations and learning, the Miramar College bookstore remained relatively unfazed. It had to! Short term classes were either ending or beginning and students needed books and supplies so as to not interrupt their education. That’s when Bookstore Supervisor Lilly Cava and her staff showed off their “Best in Class” spirit.

“This process to remain open and staffed was really hard,” said Cava. “There was so much paperwork to process with students ordering and returning books online.”

Cava and her staff of 8 have been on campus Monday-Friday since given the greenlight to return in mid-April. Perhaps, more than any other campus resource, they are so vital to student success.

The only thing missing this year, the long lines that form the first week of school.

Cava and her staff now spend most of their time fulfilling online orders, but in early August the tough part begins. “EMT, Aviation, and Art students will need supplies for their fall classes,” said Cava. “While campus remains closed, we plan to have a window open starting August 10 for students to quickly and safely come by campus to pick up their supplies.” For the rest, its ecommerce, and like Amazon somebody needs to fulfill those orders. Cava arrives at an otherwise quiet campus each morning at 7:30 and remains until around 7pm when the last book is shipped. She and her team must box up around 50 books a day and ship them. Demand and the volume of books shipped moves to a new level when Pell Grants are distributed the first week of August.

Students can order books online at https://www.bookstore.sdccd.edu/miramar/. The bookstore buy back program for students that attended in the fall and/or summer is available online here https://www.bookstore.sdccd.edu/miramar/sell_main.asp.

Cava and her staff take all the necessary precautions while working inside the bookstore using masks, gloves and remaining socially distanced. They hope to see the smiling faces of all our students in the near future.
