CTE Signing Day Draws Eager Students

Miramar College's Career Technical Education program hosted a "Signing Day" on April 13 for local high school students pledging a commitment to attend a Miramar College CTE program after high school graduation.

Thirteen San Diego area high school students attended the event and pledged a commitment to study either Automotive Technology or Diesel Technology at the college. Two lucky students received the newly created Career Education Inspire Scholarship.

“Our Career Education Signing Day celebrates the life-changing moment when a student chooses to commit to their future careers,” said Claudia Estrada-Howell, associate dean, Strong Workforce Programs at San Diego Miramar College. “Participating students will be individually recognized for their dedication to learn in-demand skills for industries like automotive and diesel technology, aviation, entrepreneurship, among other high-paying fields. These workers of tomorrow will choose an industry-aligned degree or certification program with the potential of financial and employment security earlier in life than their fellow classmates who attend a 4-year school right after graduation.”

Participants signed a letter-of-intent to attend Miramar College, received program swag, and enjoyed dinner.

Although this event was intimate, college staff made a huge impact and the room was filled with lots of smiles and cheers.

Providing the keynote speeches were USMC Veterans, Valentino Nevarez and Kevin Croan. Both are diesel technology program graduates and are currently employed at FedEx as diesel mechanics. Croan also holds a BS in Mathematics. They have each returned to Miramar College as adjunct professors in the diesel technology program as well.
