These books may be purchased at the college bookstore, or at local airport Fixed Base Operators such as Marv Golden Aircraft Supply at MYF, El Cajon Aircraft Service at SEE or Carlsbad Aircraft Supply at CRQ. Additionally they may be ordered via online services through normal book vendors such as Barnes and Noble, or Amazon.com.  They are all available digitally, and some are free to download.  

Tools Required

The following tools are required for students attending the AMT program.

This list contains the minimum tool requirement and is not intended as a complete trade tool list.

Tools required for General coursework:

  • Toolbox (at least 18 inches long) and lock; recommend toolbag 13"x16"x17"
  • OSHA approved eye protection—safety glasses, goggles or face shield
  • 6" scale (graduated in 1/10, 1/100, 1/32 and 1/64-inch increments)
  • 8-inch long adjustable wrench (Crescent wrench)
  • Combination (box and open-end) wrench set (1/4", 3/8", 7/16", 1/2", 9/16", 5/8", 11/16" and 3/4")
  • Allen wrench set—13 piece (0.050" to 3/8")
  • 6" long nose pliers
  • 6" combination slip joint pliers
  • 6" duckbill pliers
  • 6" diagonal cutters
  • Ball peen hammer, 8-ounce
  • Scribe
  • Medium sized mill bastard file (single or double cut)
  • Medium sized finish file, 2nd cut or smooth
  • File handle for each file
  • Needle file set
  • File card
  • Center punch
  • Hacksaw frame and hacksaw blades, 28 or 32 teeth-per-inch
    • (Note: ensure hacksaw frame can hold two blades side-by-side at the same time)
    • 12" combination square
    • Safety wire spools: .032-inch and .041-inch diameters (Sharing between students is acceptable)

Additional Tools required for Airframe coursework:

  • Phillips screwdriver set to include a #1 and #2 tip, 4-inch long shank
  • Common-slot screwdriver set to include a 1" stubby, 4", and 8" long shanks
  • Pin punches, 3/32", 1/8", 5/32", and 3/16" shank diameters
  • Cold chisel, 3/8" face
  • Mallet, 8 oz., 2" face (plastic, rubber or rawhide)
  • Steel measuring tape, 10-foot
  • 6" dividers
  • Pocket or utility knife
  • Medium sized half-round finishing file (single cut)
  • Medium sized round (rat-tail) file
  • File handles for each file
  • Plastic squeegee assortment
  • Sharpie® Ultra-Fine marker

Additional Tools required for Powerplant coursework:

  • Thickness (feeler) gages .0015-inch through .025-inch
  • 1/4" drive standard socket set and ratchet wrench w/ 3" and 6" extension
  • 3/8" drive standard socket set and ratchet wrench w/ 3" and 6" extension
  • 3/8" drive universal joint
  • 7/8" deep well socket, 3/8" drive, for spark plugs
  • 7/8" combination (box and open end) wrench
  • 3/8" - to - 1/2" socket adapter
